Access online wordtorque workshop
Access workshop: blended asynchronous and synchronous study
Access workshops are 12 hours of course work, organized into 4 modules. Each module is 3 hours: a 2-hour self-guided, pre-recorded study session and a follow-up 1-hour Zoom where participants will engage in activities and discussion to clarify learning for that module.
Participants will first join a brief introductory Zoom session for the overall Access workshop. They will then have 7 days to watch the first 2-hour pre-recorded video, supported by a guided study booklet. Following this, participants will join a 1-hour live Zoom session to more fully understand the module. This format of self-study and online session will be repeated for the remaining 3 modules. Participants are given 2 weeks to complete the self-study for Module 3.

I am offering a deep-dive, 12-hour Access workshop held over 5 weeks. It is aimed towards both those with little experience and those keen to consolidate their understanding of Word Inquiry. In order to make this accessible to people across different time zones who have teaching (and life) commitments, it will be a combination of self-guided pre-recorded study sessions and live online sessions where you engage in activities and further strengthen your understanding through discussion.
All sessions will include a focus on application in the classroom and participants will try many of the activities they can then use with their students. Participants will be supported with specific lessons, encouraged to try them with their students between sessions, and be given the opportunity to receive feedback.
This has changed our approach to reading, writing and spelling. We are very grateful to Fiona for helping us understand how we can introduce word inquiry to our young learners. Graham Laing ISG Jubail Saudi Arabia
Personally, it hit home when you expressed that the concepts we, as teachers, aim to establish with our students, are the same, yet the change occurs with the pace in which we dive into these concepts. I have had so many students come to me with "holes" in their learning. It is apparent that they only understand the writing system on a surface level not a deeper level which can ultimately help them in other areas of their learning. Workshop Details
Participants will study English orthography, learning how it uses an interrelation of morphology, etymology and phonology to represent the meanings of words and show relationships among words.
All sessions will include a focus on application in the classroom and participants will try many of the activities they can then use with their students. Participants will be supported with specific lessons, encouraged to try them with their students between sessions, and be given feedback.
If you have taken a Snapshot workshop, the Access workshop will take more time to explore and deepen the orthographic concepts you were introduced to. And if you have taken any of the Targeted workshops you’ll know they moved at a pretty fast pace. Not so with the Access - there is more time for participants to work at their own pace through the pre-recorded session. Time is then given in the Zoom session to engage in activities, see some student videos, practice using the range of tools and processes that support students in their journey and discuss questions that have been asked.
By the culmination of this workshop participants will have been presented with many opportunities to:
- deepen their own understanding of how English words are structured
- know how to provide a supportive environment which fosters curiosity about how words work
- learn there really is a system and it can be explored through scientific inquiry
- use this inquiry process and discover for themselves the satisfaction and deep learning that ensues from following an investigation from start to finish
- engage with activities you can immediately use with your class
- use authentic children’s literature as one important source of interesting words for exploration
- understand the power of the morphemes (bases, prefixes and suffixes)
- be better informed about the complexity of letter-sound relationships and learn how this is interwoven with the structure and history of words
- develop confidence using a variety of word inquiry tools and processes, such as spelling-out loud, the word sum and the morphological matrix
- know there actually is research behind the approach
- discover how studying word structure can strengthen learning in all subject areas, with all students, be they 5 or 15 or even 55!
